Fun and Free Things to Do In August by Donna Amato
With one more month of Summer 2009, many of us are scrambling to do all those summertime activities we will miss come September. Here are some great (mostly) free things to do in August.

New Jets Head Rex Ryan’s Diet a Part of His First Training Camp by Joe Pietaro
Late July in Cortland, New York. The preparation for 16 games that run through the cold of December begin in the heat and humidity of the summer. The team goes through treacherous two-a-days and countless repetitions to ensure that the mistakes are limited when the games count.

Dave Carroll Tweaks the Stock Market by Joe Wallace
BBC World Service reported a fascinating story recently about United Airlines and their reported $180 million dollar drop in value because of a YouTube video.

Got Kids, Must Travel: The Hampton Ocean Resort by Janene Mascarella
Last week, we packed up the car and headed east for the ultimate playmate: My two kids, three of their best friends, and four days of chillaxing on a private beach at the Hampton Ocean Resort. Really, what else can you ask for? This family fun vacation was our last summer hurrah.

G.I. Joe: The Rise Of Cobra by Christopher Boyle
Well, it's been a rather lackluster summer thus far, dominated by the usual array of flashy blockbuster films, most of which are big franchise pictures based on comic books and toy lines. And in keeping with that trend comes the latest flick designed to tap into our collective sense of nostalgia: G.I. Joe: The Rise Of Cobra.

by Cognac Wellerlane

Celebrities and Hampton Fashionistas attended an elegant evening in West Hampton Beach at the palatial home of Rabbi Schneier and Tobi Rubinstein Schneier to support Chabad's Children of Chernobyl.

Recent News from Long Islanders

Green Stuff to Do - Celebrate Earth Day by Donna Amato I recently received an email from Gail Roca, owner of The Kids Kloset in West Islip, describing her company. “Our goals are to help people earn money in these tough economic times, recycle goods they would otherwise fill the landfills with, and promote the cause to resell, reuse, and recycle”, she says.

Brooklyn’s Jackie Robinson Honored in Flushing and Throughout Baseball by Joe Pietaro
There have many great players throughout the history of the game they call baseball. Babe Ruth may still be the most recognizable name to this day even though he played his last game 72 years ago and died 13 after that.

Why Amtrak Rules and Air Travel Sucks by Joe Wallace
Two recent incidents have convinced me that Amtrak is the king of hassle-free travel. Confession time--I was an airline snob after 13 years of jet setting across the world covering stories as a military news reporter. I never once gave Amtrak the time of day when I was a hardcore frequent flyer.

Momtrepreneurs Restore Your Smile: A primer on dental implants by Janene Mascarella
Are you hiding your smile? If you've got something to be shy about, you are certainly not alone. According to the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, 69% of adults ages 35 to 44 have lost at least one permanent tooth to an accident, gum disease, a failed root canal or tooth decay.

I have no idea what the hell I just watched by Christopher Boyle
Crank: High Voltage, a sequel to 2006's Crank, is the craziest movie I've ever seen. It makes the intense original film seem tame and mild-mannered in comparison. I'm not even sure how to review it, what score to give it, or how I even feel after subjecting myself to its insanity.

Eggs and Bunnies and Festivals Oh My by Donna Amato Easter is right around the corner and spring is (sort of) in the air…have you taken your kids on any egg hunts yet? Visited the Easter Bunny? There’s a lot to do around Long Island to celebrate the season, so, as the ol’ rabbit would say, hop to it! What: Patchogue’s 10th Annual Bunny Run and Egg Hunt

Yankees Mourn Both Richman and Blanchard by Joe Pietaro
The modern day Yankees of the ‘high and mighty’ attitude and single box seats costing over $2,000 per game may be the target of much scorn throughout the state of Massachusetts – and even in New York – but the baseball world mourns with them on the passing of not one, but two exceptional people.

California Ponders Marijuana Tax, New York Next? by Joe Wallace
Before you start shouting: I have no evidence whatsoever that New York officials are thinking about joining California in considering making marijuana legal and taxable. That notion as it applies to New York is, shall we say, a pipe dream.

Momtrepreneurs Month: Jacqueline V Designs / Handcrafted Artisan Jewelry by Janene Mascarella
On a much needed mom’s-night-out recently, I spied the most beautiful necklace on my sister’s neck. “Oooh, where did you get that?” I asked, sizing it up to someday snag (I mean ‘borrow’) it. Turns out, my sister, Krissy got it for her birthday and not from Barneys, Bloomingdales or Nordstrom, either. Rather, a local jewelry designer, Jackie Viterbo.

12 Rounds by Christopher Boyle
The first thing I have to say about the 12 Rounds is that it's produced by WWE Films. As in, World Wrestling Entertainment. As in, a pro wrestling company. Yes, WWE have started making their own films, starring their own wrestling talent, and now that they have several features of sub-par quality under their belt, one has to wonder why. Perhaps they had a surplus of cash they were desperate to get rid of?

‘One & Done’ Best Case Scenario for Favre and Jets by Joe Pietaro
What started with an impromptu press conference last August in Cleveland and ended in a conference call on Wednesday can be summed up in one word – disappointing. When Brett Favre was introduced as the Jets new quarterback prior to the opening of the team’s exhibition schedule against the Browns, the air was filled with hope and visions of him celebrating in a different green jersey than the familiar number four that he wore for 16 mostly highly successful seasons in Green Bay.

At The Movies: Taken by Christopher Boyle
If you're a long-time fan of my reviews here on Long Island Exchange (well, of course you are!), then you know that, in addition to my love of cultured, sophisticated cinema, I am also an unabashed action movie junkie. Such films are best exemplified by speeding bullets, exploding cars, and flying bodies, all typically supplied by a square-jawed hero who never flinches once throughout the sundry carnage.

Hey Kids...Let’s Party! by Donna Amato
Kiddie birthday parties…love ‘em or dread ‘em, most parents must deal with ‘em eventually. Costing anywhere from $11 to over $70 per child, children parties are big business. So if a shindig for your child, from toddler to teen, is in your near future, here are some ideas worth considering.

Islanders Being Put Into a Corner; May Be Forced to Relocate by Joe Pietaro
Throughout the history of professional sports, franchises have picked up and moved to different cities regularly. Perhaps the most famous – and heartbreaking – one was the Brooklyn Dodgers. When Walter O’Malley relocated ‘Dem Bums’ from the Borough of Churches to glitzy Los Angeles, it was looked at so angrily that a funny joke was started because of the former Dodgers owner.

An Open Letter to the 44th President of the United States by Joe Wallace
You won't have time to read this. Now that you are officially sworn in, you've got your work cut out for you. The 43rd President really did a number on the Great Experiment, didn't he? Just look at the state of this country; it resembles a suburban kitchen after an army of three-year-olds finished playing chef in it. Every pot and pan has been pulled from the cupboards, the place is strewn with chocolate syrup, flour, and peanut butter.

At The Movies: Gran Torino by Christopher Boyle
Ah, getting older- it's no fun. Friends and loved ones pass on, your annoying kids try to ship you off to the old folks home, and the neighborhood you built a life in is slowly changed foreign cultures. At least, that's what getting older means in Clint Eastwood's latest film, Gran Torino, a film he not only stars in, but directs as well. It's a tale of anger, stubbornness, and change, and it's one of the better films I've seen recently.

At The Movies: The Wrestler by Christopher Boyle
It's funny - growing up and into my early adulthood, I loved professional wrestling. I can't say why I enjoyed watching grown men in spandex play-fighting, but eventually I grew out of it. But to this day, I'll find myself occasionally flipping through the channels only to come across a WWE broadcast, and to my surprise I'll find myself actually watching for a few minutes, if only to relive old memories.

Disney in New York by Donna Amato Now that my daughters are at ages where they can (sort of!) sit still in a movie theater-yes, with bribery in the form of candy, popcorn and the usually forbidden soda- I decided to scope out some local plays they may be interested in seeing. It appears that Disney productions-from “Peter Pan” to “The Aristocats”- are the hot tickets these days. So, now, in addition to watching Disney’s “Enchanted” at home, which seems to be on a continuous loop in my DVD player, we can go out to see a princess-y, sing-song-y, let’s-talk-to-the- animals-show in real life, too.

Giants Need to Make a Call on Plaxico Burress by Joe Pietaro
Call it a ‘Catch-17’ situation for Jerry Reese. The Giants’ general manager knows in his heart that the outcome of last Sunday’s 23-11 loss to Philadelphia in the NFC divisional round may have been different if Plaxico Burress was on the field catching everything quarterback Eli Manning would throw right between the 1 and 7 on the front of his jersey. But due to the suspension of the troubled wide receiver, we will never know that for certain.

Bye Bye to Soon to be Ex-President George Bush by Joe Wallace
I read strange things in the headlines lately. In the laugh out loud department: Soon to be Ex-President George Bush was quoted as saying people "misunderestimated" him. That noise you just heard is the collective sighing of hundreds of NYC comedy writers who know their days of easy material are coming to an end. Barack Obama doesn't talk in idiot-speak.

Here’s How to Wow Her On Valentine’s Day by Janene Mascarella
When a guy friend contacted me for my best Valentine’s Day gift suggestion, I had my hands full. Sure, diamonds are a girl's best friend but the thing is; he just bought her one—an engagement ring. Wondering how he was going to possibly top that, he was determined to “wow” his bride-to-be on Valentine’s Day. I asked him to give me some time to think.

Transporter 3 by Christopher Boyle
Welcome back to my humble internet column, one and all. For today's film review we'll be taking a look at Transporter 3, an action movie and latest installment in the popular Transporter series starring British actor Jason Statham. After reviewing several of his movies previously here on Long Island Exchange (such as The Bank Job and Death Race), I'm beginning to think that I'm something of a qualified Jason Statham expert. Let's see...he's a tough-guy who's really good at driving a car.

Montauk Point Lighthouse

Montauk Point Lighthouse is the oldest lighthouse in the state of New York, built in 1796. This wonderful lighthouse still serves as a beacon to ships at sea, and has become a popular historic place for tourists. Montauk Point Lighthouse is maintained as well as owned by the Montauk Historical Society, and the preservation of this wonderful landmark is due to the generous contributions that are made. This Lighthouse is host to a number of exciting events including the Annual Sprint Triathlon and Relay. This event is popular and is becoming larger each year. The end to the Triathlon is held at the Lighthouse with breadfast served at the ending of the race. This is an exciting event that has been held for thirteen years.

Montauk Point Lighthouse has been the place for many wedding ceremonies as well as receptions. This Lighthouse is the picture perfect place to hold a wedding. With the wispy clouds and a sweet breeze coming from the ocean, what better place to say "I DO"! There is a museum and gift shop also on the premises. Providing you with all the history and trinkets that you need. Tours are available to schools and to the public for a small fee per person. The Lighthouse was restored in 1998 because of some structural damage that was beginning to occur due to the age of the Lighthouse. This is the only restoration that has taken place in 200 years of operation. There is no better place to discover the Atlantic Ocean. Visit the Montauk Point Lighthouse and experience a lifetime of history and beauty.

Long Island Ferry Service

Long Island is an island in the southeast of New York. It is directly across from Manhattan. There are at least two ferries that service Long Island. They are working year-round and supply transportation to several different places. Ferries have always been a break from the norm such as traveling by plane or car. These ferry trips present an experience of calm and relaxation.

Although slower than most other means of transportation, the ferries of Long Island allow visitors or local inhabitants to be able to travel to another destination without the high cost of driving. Ferry rides are certainly quite enjoyable experiences. There are several places the ferries are able to shuttle people to, including Fire Island, where cars are prohibited. The ferries also connect to many places in Connecticut, including Rhode Island and Bridgeport.

Another destination that the ferries regularly transport to is Shelter Island. You can also travel from the southern fork of Long Island at Montauk to the Northern fork or the other way around.Whichever route or destination you eventually choose, ferries should provide a different and quieter way to get there. Instead of the noisy humdrum of the city and its automobiles, you can feel the salty breeze of the sea in your hair and feel the ocean spray., as you head toward your destination through the rippling currents.

Long Island Weather

Long Island is a typical Northeastern Coastal town in the United States when it comes to weather patterns. The winters can be brutal and cold but they are also beautiful with their big blankets of snow enveloping the landscape. The Atlantic coast areas of the Long Island shores have a weather pattern dictated by the ocean breeze that makes it cooler in the summers than inland where dense population creates a heated and more humid effect. The eastern most tip of Long Island can be as much as 20 degrees cooler than those areas to the western end because of the way the eastern side sticks out into the Atlantic Ocean.

Long Island weather is often plagued by hurricanes and other ocean type storms that can be quite brutal. Summers are hot and humid because of the high water content in the air. Spring and fall are famous all along the eastern coastline because they bring not only the most temperate of weather in the region but also the most vibrant displays of color as the seasons change, although very rare tornados are possible in Long Island. In the winter the majority of the snow tends to fall inland away from the ocean where snow often turns to rain and slush. Typical snow accumulation is just a few inches but massive snow falls of up to a foot or more often occur several times during the winter season.
