Long Island New York

Long Island, New York, is one of the top tourist destinations in the entire United States. From historical landmarks to operating lighthouses, from family fun parks to museums, and zoos to arboretums, there is something for everyone! There is always something new and exciting going on at Long Island.

Visitors to the Long Island area will find a diverse selection of boutiques, auction houses, gallereries, and antique dealers. The wide range of options can at times be overwhelming for shoppers of every sort. Those who seek unique and unusual antiques will be thrilled to find that nearly every corner at Long Island houses some sort of antiques dealer. Both professional and novice decorators have been traveling to Long Island for many years in order to find exquisite fine art, priceless collectibles, and artifacts rich in historic, country charm.

The Long Island area takes great pride in their variety of aquariums and zoos. When it comes to wild life of all sorts, central suffolk hosts six establishments with creatures of any number of species. South Shore hosts two additional venues, while North Shore has one. Regardless of which location you choose to visit, you can be assured that you and your loved ones will be awed and amazed. At the aquarium you can choose to undertake such activities as swimming with the sting rays or plunging into the shark tank, from the safety of a cage, of course! The local zoos and game farms allow you to enjoy wild life from a close up vantage point. You can also visit the Long Island wildlife preserves, where creatures roam free.

The breathtaking beauty of Long Island's widely acclaimed, manicured formal gardens and lush arboretums beacon visitors to stop and smell the roses for awhile. The sheer majesty of these gardens, some of which surround historical museums and impressive mansions, are also commonly used by professional artists as inspirational viewpoints. Likewise, visitors of all ages can take in the scenery as they stroll down the wandering walkways. These remarkably landscaped areas are just the place to enjoy quiet, personal reflection, or to view beauty which is naturally remarkable.

The residents of Long Island know that at any given time of the year, they can expect to find a host of concert venues. From outdoor, impromptu stages to professional concert productions, there are numerous concerts to keep you entertained until the wee hours of the night! Major indoor venues host well known performers of all styles of music, while crisp outdoor breezes grace visitors upon the waterfront as favorite local artists take the stage.

No matter your taste or preference, you are sure to find something to your liking when you visit Long Island, New York!

Recent Stories on Long Island Exchange

At The Movies: Doomsday by Christopher Boyle
Doomsday is basically a mish-mash combination of a number of various movies, and the resulting concoction adds up to far less than the sum of its parts. Director Neil Marshall's rip-off...um, excuse me, I mean "homage to" various beloved movies of his youth starts out promising enough, but soon just dissolves into a stew of stupidity and the dreaded "been there, done that" syndrome.

Glazing over the Grocery Bills by Janene Mascarella
Sometimes I feel if I take another trip to the grocery store, I'm going to scream. Then when I look at how much we spent in a month on bread, milk, eggs and a zillion other items--I feel faint. Seems like I spend most of my time wandering up and down the isles hunting for new snacks to pack for the kids' lunch. And taking them with me on my weekly excursion is no picnic. I land out spending way more than necessary as I throw items to keep them quiet. DVD's, books, toys, whatever it takes to keep them calm and happy in their car cart.

Osama Bin Laden is Dead by Joe Wallace
Have you seen the headlines about the latest Osama bin Laden tape? The figure on the audiotape is supposedly bin Laden, at least in the minds of the geniuses at Al Jazeera television. Why these broadcasters continue to give airtime to these audio missives is beyond me. This crap is news?

Yankees’ Staff Looking Shaky as Season Set to Begin by Joe Pietaro
All the questions could have been avoided if the Yankees just pulled the trigger on the most obvious of needs and make the deal for lefthanded starter Johan Santana. The two-time American League Cy Young Award winner and arguably the game’s best pitcher was dangled by Minnesota general manager Bill Smith during the Winter Meetings in Nashville. After failing to come to an agreement on a contract extension with him, the Twins practically begged someone to make them a reasonable offer for Santana. Not as many clubs lined up as one would have expected.

Why Do We Care So Much about Celebrity Pregnancies? by Laura Rupert
Pregnancy is beautiful and people feel a connection to expecting women. Add to the equation a celebrity and you have millions of interested people worldwide wanting to know every little detail. It is probably because of the added scrutiny from paparazzi that celebrity women wait to announce their pregnancies until they are in the third trimester. Even when women are obviously pregnant (think J. Lo and Angelina Jolie), they avoid the obvious and carry on as if they weren’t pregnant.

Psychological Problems Deserve Prozac not Paparazzi
Many of us have dealt with psychological problems in the past and many of us deal with them every single day. For those that do not suffer firsthand they probably know at least one person in their family or close circle of friends that takes an anti-depression drug or a prescription for some other mental illness.

MVP Eli Gives Brady, Belichick the Blues in Stunning 17-14 SBXLII Win
Glendale, AZ- Being the underdog is a familiar scenario for the New York Giants. Heading into the 2007 season without Tiki Barber, the team was not expected to qualify for the playoffs. Even when they joined the postseason dance, heading on the road as an NFC wild card entry, they were given little to no chance to make it very far.

Stock Market Follies
Whenever I go to the gym, I always wind up on the cross trainer machine next to guys watching the financial reports on the gym TV system. I finally got curious to see what was holding the attention of sweaty dudes with determined looks on their faces, so I switched over one day and wound up being sucked into a mini-obsession with stocks.

Coughing Up Some Facts: Warnings About Cold Medications for Kids
Alright. Now I'm really confused. I remember a while ago hearing news reports that cold and cough medication was not safe for children under 2. Got that. It's perfectly clear. But in case you didn't, recently, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued an advisory strongly recommending that over-the-counter cough and cold medications not be given to infants and children under two years old because of the risk of life-threatening side effects. I got a zillion "Must-read. Cold medication warnings" fwds from some of my fwd-happy friends when that went out over the news wires. I responded to a few, "Phew, thanks for the info!". But really, it was on the news, all day. and I usually zap all Fwd emails with the delete button--even if it says, don't delete. In fact, faster if it says don't delete.

Pure blood, death, and mayhem. We’ve been apart far too long, my friend.
My fellow moviegoers, let me tell you of a time known as the 1980’s. Former actor Ronald Regan was president, and in Regan’s America, an odd duality existed in the movies produced during that era- sex was bad (and usually punishable by death), but violence was welcomed, especially when it was directed at dirty, godless non-Americans. Known to many as the Golden Age of Action, the 80’s box-office was firmly ruled by macho, massively muscled one-man armies such as Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone, Jean-Claude Van Damme, and Stephen Seagal. Combined, these gentlemen killed enough people on-screen to fill the Grand Canyon hundreds of times over. Plots? Character development? Who needed them? As long as we had unlimited ammunition, sharp bladed weapons, and plenty of bad guys to insert them into, audiences were elated.

Addiction — The One Area Where Celebrities are Just Like Us
After a brief respite from being plastered all over every website and magazine, Lindsay Lohan is back in the press. This time because she was seen drinking champagne on New Year’s Eve. For any other person, and even many other celebrities, this wouldn’t be that big of a deal. Even for some recovering alcoholics, this wouldn’t be that big of a deal. But, for LiLo, it’s as if she has committed the biggest crime.

Gossage Elected to Baseball Hall of Fame
Being elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame is the ultimate compliment for a player. Since the first class in 1936, the names read like a ‘who’s who’ for greatness in the National Pastime. The lone player inductee this summer can stand on his own, as he did 22 years on the mound as one of the game’s best closers. Rich “Goose” Gossage, who is best known from his days with the New York Yankees, will be enshrined and be a proud member of an exclusive club.

President Huckabee?
I told myself that my first screed for 2008 would NOT be about politics. It's too flimsy to be considered a New Year's resolution, so I didn't worry too much about breaking my promise by writing about that Huckabee guy. The one running for office with God as his Vice Presidential running mate. (For you too-literal folks, this is SARCASM here.)

New Year, New Me
Every New Year, I play along with the status quo and make that silly list of stock resolutions: Eat better, exercise more, be a better person, blah, blah, blah. But you know what? All those wonderful things I planned to do-- just don’t get done. So this year, I decided to try another trick to help me make some much needed improvements in the coming year. I’m going to mix it up and put a whole new twist on my New Year’s resolutions: a handy-dandy, detailed To Do(N’T) list.

Aliens Vs. Predator: Requiem
Merriam-Webster defines a Requiem as “A mass or solemn chant for the dead.” That alone tells us that no good will befall any of the characters involved in today’s review- 20th Century Fox’s Aliens Vs. Predator: Requiem, a sequel to 2004’s fairly brain-dead Alien vs. Predator. The original film pitted the title creatures, both “stars” of their respective franchises, against one another for some hot monster-on-monster action.

REAL ESTATE MARKETS

Real Estate economics is the application of economic techniques to real estate markets. It describes and explains real estate prices, building production, and real estate consumption. One of the closest fields in housing economics is the real estate market. Both drawing on partial equilibrium analysis, urban economics, spatial economics, and finance.
The main participants in real estate markets are:
  • Owner/User - These people are both owners and tenants. They purchase houses as an investment and also to live in or utilize as a business.
  • Owner - These people are pure investors. They do not consume the real estate that they purchase. Typically they rent out or lease the property to someone else.
  • Renter - These people are pure consumers. Developers - These people prepare raw land for building which results in new product for the market.
  • Renovators - These people supply refurbished buildings to the market.
  • Facilitators - This includes banks, real estate brokers, lawyers, and others that facilitate the purchase and sale of real estate.
The owner/user, owner, and renter comprise the demand of the market while the developers and renovators comprise the supply. In order to apply simple supply and demand analysis to real estate markets a number of modifications need to be made to standard microeconomic assumptions and procedures. In particular, the unique characteristics of the real estate market must be accommodated and these include durabilty, heterogeneous, high transaction costs, long time delays, and immobility.

The best and worst in real estate would be considered in some regions. Areas in the northeast like Long Island were among the first in the region to see the effects of the slowdown. The region still has a ways to go before finding solid ground. In the opposite end, the south housing market look healthy for the region, which may boast 12 of the 20 hottest markets for 2007. In the Midwest, it comes out that there was a steady market and the region missed out on much of the boom but at least it won’t suffer the aftermath. None of the midwestern cities in the forecast are projected to fall. Lastly, the west was chilled on the coast. During the boom, speculators headed westward to find gold in bricks and shingles. Now they’re heading for the exits. The region will probably be home to the nation’s five coldest markets for 2007.

New York Islanders Make the Right Moves and Non-Moves
Speculation approaching the February 27 NHL trading deadline was that the New York Islanders were going to be sellers instead of buyers. Jason Blake, who is having a career year, was rumored to be on the move to a number of Western Conference teams. He had been looking for a contract extension from Islanders General Manager Garth Snow and it is no guarantee that he will resign. But once the dealing period had passed, the Islanders not only held onto Blake, but also made a blockbuster deal.

Thinking About High Def On Oscar Night
I had one eye on the Oscars, one ear on the phone, and my spleen on full-vent mode Sunday night. A friend had called to ask me about a million questions, the first being what I thought of Alan Arkin edging out Eddie Murphy for Best Supporting Actor.

Hannibal Rising
Hannibal Lecter. The charismatic, cultured, cannibalistic serial killer was originally introduced to the world by novelist Thomas Harris in the 1981 novel Red Dragon and later popularized into iconic status by films such as Silence of the Lambs. Now Hannibal has returned yet again, and this time it's in a prequel that explores his early years and how he became the character who would one day be voted the #1 screen villain of all-time by the American Film Institute.
